Morse Micro CEO Insight Series B: We’re Just Getting Started

New investment from prominent global strategic partner, financial investors and former Australia prime minister enhances Morse Micro’s ability to scale and deploy next-generation Wi-Fi HaLow technology globally

Michael De Nil, co-founder and CEO of Morse Micro, shares his perspective on how Series B funding is accelerating Morse Micro’s journey.

Since launching in 2016, Morse Micro has focused on long-range, low-power wireless connectivity. Today our portfolio includes the industry’s smallest, fastest and lowest power Wi-Fi HaLow compliant SoCs and modules. With use-cases that extend across the complete IoT ecosystem, from consumer to commercial and industrial to agricultural use, Morse Micro’s Wi-Fi HaLow technology is enabling wirelessly connected devices to achieve 10x longer range,  while covering 100x the area or 1000x the volume of traditional Wi-Fi networks.

Wi-Fi HaLow: the next generation of Wi-Fi for the IoT

To have an impact in today’s fiercely competitive global market, I firmly believe we need to place a bold bet on what will be possible in the future. In 2017, wireless connectivity approaches for the Internet of Things (IoT) were fragmented and frankly limited. Focus went to solving the battery life and range challenges required for low-power IoT devices. At that time, Wi-Fi was also gaining traction and soon became the industry’s most ubiquitous wireless protocol. We started to explore and develop a new type of Wi-Fi, called Wi-Fi HaLow based on the 802.11ah protocol. It was poised to expand connectivity across the IoT ecosystem and overcome the fundamental weaknesses of existing wireless technologies by offering ultra-low power, longer range and secure connections at much higher network capacities. The momentum was building, and I was convinced our digital future will be driven by the next generation of Wi-Fi. Everything we’ve learned at Morse Micro since then has reinforced this belief.

The Morse Micro story began in Australia where our engineering team began developing Wi-Fi HaLow technology based on these ideas. The results were quickly promising. For the first time in the industry, we showed the potential of Wi-Fi HaLow to drive next-generation connectivity for IoT devices. In our first year, we demonstrated what’s possible with Wi-Fi HaLow for new, cutting-edge applications in segments such as industrial IoT, wireless communications, energy control and more.

In just over six fast-paced years, we established the necessary ingredients to pioneer Wi-Fi HaLow: engineering, partnerships, operations and—most importantly—our team. We’ve solved the fundamental technical challenges and earned the right to build Wi-Fi HaLow devices and networks at scale.

For the first time, we will see machines we trust physically interacting with our world, enriching people’s lives, and freeing them to focus on what matters most. This vision will mark the beginning of a new era of Wi-Fi technology that promises to be more transformative than any that came before it. We are excited to be pioneering the next generation of Wi-Fi that can adapt to the needs of people, connected devices and IoT networks worldwide.

Our road ahead

We intend to use the new capital raised to expand our Wi-Fi HaLow offerings, including the design of new solutions, while accelerating the go-to-market strategy for our existing Wi-Fi HaLow chips and modules.

I’m excited to look ahead as we take the next step forward in our company’s journey toward market scale and leadership for Wi-Fi HaLow and the Internet of Things. Our series B funding is an inflection point in this journey. We’re on our way to grow the company and build a world-class team of people who have the passion to tackle the hardest wireless problems and who want to change the world with us.
