What is the Maximum Range of Wi-Fi Signal?

What is the Maximum Range of Wi-Fi Signal?

The age-old question we’ve all asked. How far does my Wi-Fi signal reach, and why does it cut out? Chances are, you’ve experienced a weak Wi-Fi signal and wondered how far you could go before it disconnects. But what is the maximum range of a Wi-Fi signal?

The truth is, there’s no single answer. Wi-Fi range depends on both the type of Wi-Fi technology and the surrounding environment. Open areas allow signals to travel farther, while walls, metal, and other obstacles weaken them. Several limiting factors – interference, frequency, and device design – affect how far your signal can go.

Wi-Fi HaLow® has been engineered to overcome these traditional limitations, extending range and improving reliability. Here’s how it differs from conventional Wi-Fi – and how to optimize your own connection.

However, to improve your Wi-Fi signal range and ensure your environment is free from limitations, it’s important to understand the challenges you’re facing. Let’s start by breaking it down.

Interference

Traditional Wi-Fi signals are sensitive to their surroundings. Key sources of interference include:

  • Physical Interference: Walls, floors and furniture absorb or reflect Wi-Fi signals, reducing range

  • Radio Interference: Nearby electronics – Bluetooth devices, microwaves, phones, and other Wi-Fi networks – compete for the same spectrum

  • Antenna Design: The strength and gain of your device’s antenna directly affect how far its signal can travel

Limiting these obstructions and interfering factors can improve your Wi-Fi signal, but what else should you consider?

Frequency

Wi-Fi operates across multiple frequency bands – 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz – each with trade-offs. Higher frequencies deliver faster speeds but shorter range. Lower frequencies travel farther but are more prone to interference.

For example:

  • 2.4 GHz can reach up to ~90 m, but it’s crowded and easily disrupted.

  • 5 GHz / 6 GHz provide higher throughput but struggle with walls and distance.

Because of these physics, traditional Wi-Fi typically tops out around 100m in open environments – and far less indoors. At Morse Micro, we’ve changed the game.

How Wi-Fi HaLow Improves Your Range

Wi-Fi HaLow redefines what’s possible for wireless range. As it operates in the sub-1GHz spectrum at 850-950MHz, it offers a longer wavelength for your Wi-Fi range and connectivity. It is designed to penetrate through obstacles and walls with ease through its low-power frequencies, to ensure your Wi-Fi operates exactly how you need it, no matter the interference.

Traditional Wi-Fi reaches roughly 50-100m, while Wi-Fi HaLow extends connectivity up to1 km and sometimes beyond – all while maintaining low power consumption.

Practical applications include:

  • Smart home: Connect and control your security cameras, smart locks, and home automation systems through one secure, long-range Wi-Fi network

  • Industrial and logistics: Improve communication and connectivity across large warehouses and logistics operations with reliable, extended-range Wi-Fi coverage

  • Enterprise security: Strengthen building access control and security camera systems with a secure, stable connection powered by Wi-Fi HaLow

  • Smart Cities: Enable smart meters, information kiosks, and other connected infrastructure with fast, dependable, and long-range wireless connectivity

Wi-Fi HaLow: Signal you’ll Never Have to Doubt Again

The concept of Wi-Fi range has been rewritten. Wi-Fi HaLow travels more than a kilometer, overcoming the barriers of interference, power limits, and congestion that constrain traditional networks.

For IoT and connected environments, it’s the next evolution in wireless – long-range, low-power, and built for the future of IoT 2.0.
