Hello? Lost connection to the house Wi-Fi as soon as you've stepped out to the pool? Classic. Your Wi-Fi connection and the great outdoors are a tale as old as time. From a Wi-Fi signal that can't identify you're just in your back garden to your off-site work-from-home office that you need to hotspot yourself in. It's frustrating and it's outdated.

The average outdoor Wi-Fi signal connection has a reach of 50-100 metres, and even then, we've all experienced broken signals and buffering through environmental obstructions. Standard Wi-Fi connections were designed for indoor use and often experience problems when multiple devices are connected simultaneously or there are obstacles between the connection points.

With Wi-Fi HaLow®, you can trust your Wi-Fi signal to work seamlessly from 1.5km away. It is designed to penetrate through materials more efficiently, ensuring your Wi-Fi connection is strong from a distance. At Morse Micro, we've researched what causes long-range Wi-Fi to be unsuccessful, so we can bring you a product that breaks through the barriers.

Traditional Wi-Fi Routers

Obstacles and materials pose a threat to standard Wi-Fi connections as they operate at higher frequencies, so the signal is easily blocked by walls, trees, and adverse weather conditions. This makes navigating your Wi-Fi signal, even throughout your home, a challenge due to areas of poor coverage. In homes or offices, where multiple devices need to be connected to the Wi-Fi, traditional Wi-Fi networks may experience issues with dropped signals and lag, as they struggle to support multiple connections. Furthermore, when multiple devices connect to a traditional Wi-Fi network, they can drain the battery quickly, which limits the network's performance. Traditional Wi-Fi networks can operate under WPA or WPA2, where general security can be quite poor and prone to getting hacked, which puts all Wi-Fi users at risk of safety and data breaches.

How have previous developments improved long-range outdoor Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi connections and signals have undergone significant research and revision to improve user success, particularly the challenge of outdoor range. So, how have they made progress?
Frequency: A key focus for improving outdoor Wi-Fi range has been the barrier of materials, so some revisions have consisted of developing networks with lower frequencies to facilitate the penetration of materials.
Mesh Networking: Mesh networks allow nodes to be placed outdoors to increase Wi-Fi coverage across large areas.
High-Gain Antennas: These directional antennas helped to increase the outdoor network range through multiple links, which made Wi-Fi connectivity and signals stronger.
Advanced Modulation: Some attempts included improving connection stability at a longer distance, though at a lower speed. This was done by making alterations to modulation techniques, such as OFDM in Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n).
Ethernet Connection: With outdoor access points connected through Ethernet (PoE), devices could be connected to outdoor locations for wider Wi-Fi coverage.

What Complications Remained?

Although these measures were implemented to improve outdoor Wi-Fi connectivity and range, they were still limited by interference. The outdoor Wi-Fi range was still limited to a few hundred meters out, and performance was challenged by obstacles and a weakened signal. So, though the connection reached further distances, the signal was still impacted, and the Wi-Fi performance was affected when connected to devices.
